Acoustic Engineering

Somebody has to measure the room, decide the number it must reach, and draw the build-up that gets there. That is the part most noise problems are missing.

What acoustic engineering actually is

It is the work that happens before anything is bought. We record what the space is doing now, work out which frequencies are carrying the problem and how the sound is getting in, then set a target and specify the build-up that reaches it.

Without that step you are buying materials and hoping. With it, you are buying a result that can be checked — and so can we.

What is in the scope

  • Baseline noise measurement and frequency profile of the actual space
  • Identifying the real path: through the wall, around it, or up through the structure
  • Setting performance targets — STC, IIC, NC or RT60, whichever the room is judged on
  • Acoustic layout drawings and a material schedule anyone can price against
  • Specification of walls, floors, ceilings, doors, glazing and every penetration
  • Supervision on site, because the detailing is where the number is won or lost
  • Post-installation measurement and a written report

If you are an architect or consultant

Send us the plan set at design stage. We will mark up where the acoustics will fail as drawn — service routes crossing a rated wall, a lift shaft against a bedroom, a floating floor that stops short of the skirting — and give you targets and details you can issue. It is far cheaper than finding it after handover.

Where this applies

Typical situations.

Homes

One bedroom on a main road, a media room, a floor under a plant area.

Offices

Open plan that needs speech privacy, boardrooms that leak, echo nobody can work in.

Hospitality

Party walls between rooms, restaurants where conversation is impossible.

Healthcare

Consultation rooms where privacy is a duty, wards that need a low noise floor.

Studios & media

Editing suites and practice rooms that need a controlled RT60 and a quiet floor.

Industrial

Plant rooms, machinery halls and generator yards measured against statutory limits.

Common questions

Asked before you ask.

What is the difference between acoustic treatment and soundproofing?

Treatment changes how a room sounds to the people inside it — echo, flutter, how long sound hangs in the air. Soundproofing stops sound moving between one space and another. Foam panels on a wall do the first and almost nothing for the second, which is the single most common and most expensive misunderstanding we are called in to correct.

Most real projects need both: insulation to contain the noise, treatment to make the room sound right once it is quiet.

What do STC, IIC, NC and RT60 actually mean?

STC is how well a wall, floor or ceiling blocks airborne sound — speech, TV, traffic. IIC is the same idea for impact: footsteps, a dropped chair. NC describes how quiet a finished room is when nothing is happening in it, which is what makes a cinema feel expensive. RT60 is how long sound takes to die away inside the room.

A wall can have a high STC and the room can still sound wrong. They are different numbers, solved by different work, and a proposal that only mentions one of them is incomplete.

Can you work in a building that is already occupied?

Yes, and most of our commercial work is exactly that. Plant rooms, DG yards and party walls are normally dealt with while the building keeps running — sequenced around working hours, with dust control and access agreed in advance. Tell us the constraint at audit stage and it goes into the programme rather than becoming a surprise later.

Do you give a report after the work is done?

Yes. We measure again after installation and hand over the readings with the as-built detail. It is the only honest way to sell acoustic work: the claim made at the start should be checkable at the end.

Send us the room.

Tell us what you can hear and where you are standing when you hear it. That is usually enough for us to tell you what the audit will be looking for.

  1. We call you back within one working day to understand the problem.
  2. We visit and measure — baseline dB levels and frequency profile, at no charge.
  3. You get a written proposal with performance targets, materials and costs, itemised.
